Our Programs

LSFL is proud to offer volunteers to both the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. Starting this fall, our volunteers will be working as reading buddies and literacy helpers in St. Mary’s, and Central Schools.  These volunteers will be working with students in need of a little extra help both in and outside of the classroom, and work together to reach literacy-based goals. They will also be assisting in teacher-run literacy workshops.

// Central Public School
Volunteers assist in the classroom during the language block (8:50-10:30am) and help teachers run literacy workshops. You would work with a group of students, or occasionally one-on-one. This school is very close to downtown centre, 5 – 10 minutes walk from the Student Center, at 135 George St, Brantford (map).

// St. Mary’s Catholic School
Volunteers work in a “reading room” upstairs with students who need extra help with literacy skills. A special focus is put on “literacy for life” – so teaching students practical applications of reading and writing. For example, you can help them read from their text books, or write a letter or story. It is a catholic elementary school, for those interested in the catholic school board system. It is located 10 minutes down Colbourne, at 455 Colbourne St., Brantford (map).

All of our volunteers have up-to-date police checks, and many are in the Education program through Nipissing and Wilfrid Laurier University, and/or plan to pursue a career in teaching or with children. We all share a love of reading and a common goal of introducing this to Brantford’s youngest citizens!

Boys reading club attempts to give children a personal and exciting experience when it comes to literature.  It ensures that the boys of our community have a chance to expand their literacy knowledge in a safe environment with positive male role models.  The official club will begin in January 2009, and will meet bi-weekly until April.  There will be a unique theme each week which will provide a fun and interactive learning environment for these children.

The Book Buddy program is a free program run by Laurier Student’s for Literacy. We offer one-on-one tutoring for 45 minutes a week. All the volunteers are eager to support and build confidence in your child’s reading and writing skills through literacy activities and worksheets. This program is available to students in grades 1 to 6.

This wonderful program is in its second year at the Brantford Public Library. LSFL is thrilled to have once again been asked to staff the centre with our volunteers.  This program runs on a drop-in basis from Monday to Thursday from 4:00pm until 7:00pm. Its doors opened on September 29th, 2008.
The centre is open for kids, grades 3 to 8.
We are university students (many in the Education program) here to help your children with their homework. Don’t hesitate to bring them in just for a few quick questions or for more in-depth help. That is what we are there for!  We can also offer a quiet study space for your child to work on their homework independently, but are there to fill any questions he or she may have along the way.  The centre is fully equipped with computers, textbooks, and many school supplies. Best of all, use of the Homework Help Centre is completely free!
